well cared for
The existing state care center is being renovated by Gem. Wohn- und Siedlungsgenossenschaft Ennstal for Volkshilfe Steiermark and extended by an annex for a care home and a new childcare facility.
Located right adjacent to the Murtal regional hospital in Knittelfeld, the old nursing home is being slightly adapted and connected to the extension by a new staircase including a bed lift. The new two-storey building comprises three residential communities with 45 beds, a central warm-up kitchen and a general communication area on the first floor, which functions as a central meeting point, a “village square”. By positioning the buildings, the ensemble forms a square in the center of the site. The courtyard-like structure enables horizontal circulation, short distances and a good overview across the storeys. Raised outdoor terraces extend the space available in the residential community and make the surrounding natural space omnipresent.
The exterior façades of the new buildings are materialized as wooden façades with vertical larch cladding. This adapts to the conditions depending on the season and time of day, creating a coherent whole. Generous room windows create a strong connection to the outside space, which invites people to linger thanks to parapets at seating height. Floor-to-ceiling windows serve as an exit and extend the rooms outwards onto the veranda.
