The new Voisthaler Hut is situated in the high valley of the Upper Dullwitz as a highly visible landmark. As a point of orientation between Hochschwab, Wetterkogel, Karlhochkogel and Fölzsattel, it replaces the existing hut and appears as a simple, clear volume in the high alpine terrain. The setting in the largely natural landscape is […]
The project intertwines the landscape with the built. Entirely in the spirit of a place that desires an atmosphere that leads man with nature to a mutual imprint. Healing through architecture is achieved through the deliberate setting of architectural subtleties, such as atriums, where the course of the day can be read and thus gives […]
With the dissolution of the Barmherzige Brüder Eggenberg hospital and its integration into the Marschallgasse site in the centre of Graz, a new appearance and a revision of the content were developed for this building project in keeping with the historic old town. The measures are characterised by two large additions. The creation of a […]

On the upper floors, the classrooms and their ancillary rooms are oriented along the outer façade and form the transition […]
The new training centre is a four-storey volume that ties in with the existing structure of the Caritas school and extends it by one storey. As a new uniform volume, the training centre presents itself in the urban space and receives an independent external effect through a uniform façade image, which gives the building a […]
The project interweaves the campus landscape with the built environment. This is entirely in keeping with the spirit of a place that desires an atmosphere that brings people together with nature to shape each other. The stepped inner courtyards, the three city gardens with the two existing plane trees in the green strip, the city […]

The design is based on an orchard meadow typical for the region. Three narrow, elongated structures are set into the arena-like topography in such a way that the buildings sometimes appear to hover over or be embedded into the terrain. The landscape flows through the building. Atria reflecting the planted orchard meadow underline this creative […]
The new Voisthalerhütte is located as a highly visible landmark in the high valley of the Upper Dullwitz. As a point of orientation between Hochschwab, Wetterkogel, Karlhochkogel and Fölzsattel, it replaces the existing hut and appears as a simple, clear volume in the high alpine terrain. In accordance with the design language, the new shelter […]
The new campus is divided into four rows which, due to their position in the urban structure, open up the characteristic view and path relationships to the surrounding (Mur) landscape. These intermediate areas stretch across the site as landscaped alleys and guide visitors and students into the building complex. As an extension of Kaiserfeldgasse, a […]
The site Schönaugürtel 20 is located on the southern edge of the Gründerzeit area in Graz and is to be redeveloped as such. The characteristic features of the Gründerzeit perimeter block development, a leafy, tranquil inner courtyard and a homogeneous, representative appearance serve as central foundations in the design process. Four upper floors on the […]
The building follows the course of the terrain as a simple stepped volume and overcomes the difference in level between the playground to the southwest and the lower entrance area through its placement on the site. Courtyard-like incisions create a strong relationship to the surrounding green space and open up the building volume, especially in […]
The basis of the urban design is the existing framework plan for the Reininghaus Graz urban development project. Building lines and boundaries are reinforced by the clear positioning and logical staggering of the design. On the “residential” building site, continuous eaves on the 4th floor define the public space and create a good readability of […]
The Rudolfinum State Museum and its neighbouring buildings form an ensemble of four solitaires in the urban fabric. The focus of the exterior design is on the development of a uniform exterior concept that aims to create a common appearance as a “cultural island” in the middle of the city. The conversion measures aim at […]
A residential care home for 105 elderly residents has been constructed on Statteggerstraße in Graz on a park-like plot in the immediate vicinity of the Andritzbach brook. The project goes back to a Europan design won in 1999, although the framework conditions have changed in the meantime: A new plot of land in the neighbourhood of the one originally planned for the development, a changed zoning plan and thus a higher density, as well as the construction of the underpass of the […]
From the early stages of the competition for this bank building, there was a clear focus on contemporary architecture and sustainable building methods which could be completed in a short period of time, with a crucial aspect on the mixed usage of key spaces. The bank’s objective was to create a customer and employee-friendly, relaxed […]
The ÖWG has constructed a Caritas nursing home for 49 residents on a plot with a mature tree population, owned by the Dörfler-Perz-Privatstiftung and located close to Göss monastery. The three-storey building with a partial basement was constructed as a solid concrete structure with wood-frame elements and achieves a different space allocation on each floor: […]
The creation of a coherent, spacious inner courtyard and the joining of the various building elements into a whole will “heal” the current unsatisfactory situation in terms of urban planning and architecture. In order to achieve this result, the courtyard is cleared and a linear building structure is developed along Marschallgasse that relates to the existing […]
The project interweaves the landscape with the built environment. This is entirely in keeping with the spirit of a place that desires an atmosphere that leads people to interact with nature. The design begins with the meadow orchard that is typical of the region. Three narrow, elongated structures are intertwined with the arena-like topography in […]
This two-floor nursing home on the grounds of the old Hummelkaserne barracks stands in a part of the city with diverse urban surrounding. The home is compact and square-shaped with asymmetrical cut-outs serving to divide the house into its spatial concept of eight housing communities, four on each floor. These are grouped around a central […]
The Waagner Biro Strasse and the noise protection measure through the Grätzel cell wall define the building field. Density specifications, ideas for use and their mix as further hard facts determine the playing field. But what urban rules are being played by? Which conditions are adopted, which are questioned? How can a livable, urban, contemporary, […]
Two arguments form the background for the decision to build the school as a two-storey building. 1. The surrounding buildings in the area are heterogeneously mixed: rows of single-family houses, multi-storey residential buildings and the parish church of St. Gebhart with its free-standing bell tower form the immediate vicinity of the new building. Out of […]
The building envelope opens up extensively on the square side; the building entrance cannot be missed by visitors due to its clear and concise arrangement. The open ground floor area allows an informal, mixed use of bank and café functions, which are defined by a counter and café area respectively. From the counter, visitors are directed […]
Developed in response to a Europe-wide competition announced by the town of Nenzing, this ambitious nursing home involved a lengthy development process in which the visions for the project in relation to care and management expressed by staff were gathered and incorporated into the design and planning of the project. The result of this process […]
A total of thirteen flats spread over three floors on a hillside plot near the centre of Nenzing. This high-quality barrier-free home was built with older individuals and those who do not need full-time care in mind. Here, they can freely decide which, if any, care packages they want to avail of. The entrance from […]
The old circular sports hall in St. Martiner Street has been replaced by a new hall which is used by the adjoining secondary school as well as various sports clubs and is suitable for international ball game tournaments. The large complex of buildings nestled on level ground along the new Hausmannstätten bypass road covers three functions: tunnel control centre, central repair shop and road maintenance depot. In order to keep the intrusion to a minimum, the building was interpreted as part of the landscape. It follows the course of the road and the […]
To the north of Hausmannstätten, six buildings with surrounding balconies are arranged in steps on the hill sloping to the southeast, parallel to the line of greatest slope. Their positioning enables a transformation of the small-scale settlement structure of the surroundings as well as the perspectives and views of the neighbourhood and of the expansive […]
Similar to the social centre Nenzing, the Maria Gail retirement home consists of two overlapping three-storey buildings with almost square ground plans. Their intersections contain the access and the nurse’s station for two residential groups on each floor. The residential groups are situated around two atriums used as winter gardens which can also function as […]
The building site at the end of a zoning designation in the northern hills of Zagreb forms a slight hilltop location that offers an incredible view over the expanse of Zagreb to the south. This slight curve in the topography and the wide opening to the south, protected by the north-western tree population, provide the […]
Similar to the boathouses on the lake, the individual houses of the health park lean against the edge of the terrain. Slightly twisted and offset, they house suites and rooms that invite you to enjoy the 360° mountain panorama. The aim is to capture this simple beauty and to implement it in a simple but […]
The retirement and nursing home of Steinfeld was built as a low-energy house. With its large, relatively enclosed volume and its many visual details it refers to the surroundings and the roots of the residents. The choice of materials – a two-storey timber frame construction built on a concrete base – corresponds to the regional, rural construction method and the filtration of the incident daylight in some areas mirrors the atmosphere of haylofts and barns. The familiar view on the Latschur, the home mountain of the region, is also provided by many openings in the building.
Two approximately square, three-storey buildings are shifted into each other and intersect, so that both access and care support points for two residential groups per floor are located in their intersections. The residential groups themselves are situated around two atriums used as winter gardens, which can also be adapted for events if required. Balconies and […]
The form of the BIO-Impulszentrum translates the classic gable-roofed house into a contemporary, future-oriented type of this archetype of the house par excellence. In all regions of Styria, this form is accepted as a house and thus connects all farms of Organic Harvest Styria. Philosophically, the form with its special abstracted formation can be thought […]
The building structure of the nursing home reveals the internal division into four house communities around a central square – “village square” – a village consisting of 4 houses. The base is also located in the centre to provide the best overview and to be a well-positioned contact point for visitors and residents. Each house […]
As part of the property of the Diakoniezentrum Sozial- und Gesundheitsbetriebe GmbH at the Harbach location in Klagenfurt, the St. Peter old people’s and nursing home is another building block in the existing ensemble of social facilities. Preserving and enhancing the appearance of the Renaissance castle of Wies-Burgstall is the primacy of the architectural design. The new building volume of the required kitchen area is conceived as an extension of the base area of the northern castle wall. The single-storey new building is placed under the historical building. A slight bend at […]
The two almost square, three-storey buildings are shifted into each other and intersect, so that in their intersections both access and care support points for two residential groups per floor are located. The residential groups themselves are situated around two atriums used as winter gardens, which can also be adapted for events if required. Balconies […]
The competition was about an extension of the bedroom wing of the State Hospital Wagna, a building from the 1960s. The design tied in with the existing extension from the year 2001, planned by Klaus Kada, which is positioned to the West and parallel to the older building. Thus consistency in design is ensured and […]
The new accommodation building forms the north end of the barracks area and at the same time a transition to the low building-density of the surroundings. In size, dimensions and positioning of the stairs it ties in with the opposite accommodation building. Together they surround the drill ground which for the first time possesses clearly […]
The design for the Nursing Home Birkenwiese competition was determined by urban-planning parameters: The site is situated on the crossing point between the Dornbirner Arche river and the railway line in close proximity to a Lebenshilfe home and a residential building. The compact, four-storey building, which is set back from the river, follows the neighbour […]
Based on a continuous Campus concept on the same level, the complex space allocation plan is realised in interconnected modular buildings, which are spread over both parts of the planning area – left and right of the Stiftingbach river – and connected by bridges. Their proportions are based on the existing urban scale, the height […]
Due to a high ecological demand and the desire to include the central position as well as the view of the beautiful surroundings into the planning, the residential complex consists of six four-storey buildings following the course of the hill. They make optimum use of the site and the way they are arranged creates high-quality […]
Based on the course of Bahnhofstraße and the existing tree population, the three-storey building consisting of two overlapping rectangles was placed on the site in a way that there is an open space between the new and old building of the nursing home and the day nursery. The western edge near the slope forms a […]
The competition for the energy-efficient multi-generational residential building “Westlich Albertinum” in Neu-Ulm was part of a funding programme of the supreme building authority in Bavaria. Its aim is a long-term reduction of CO2 emissions in a publicly-funded housing construction. The four-storey building is defined as free-standing pavilion whose position is determined in consideration of the […]
The planning comprises an extension to the existing municipal office, a one-storey annexe building positioned parallel to the L65 road. The focus was on a barrier-free access using a flat ramp and the topic of opening the municipality to the outdoors. The floor-to-ceiling glazing facing the street conveys the feeling of a “showcase”. Thus the […]
The museum is integrated into the natural stone wall and defines a clear border to the court. The cafeteria and the event hall are situated directly on the court. The prayer house, the old vicarage and the new museum form a harmonic ensemble. A dark coloured concrete approximates the colour of the existing natural stone […]
How can a residential building in urban fringe location near a brook with riparian forest be situated in the landscape when the resident is severely handicapped? Which typology or organization facilitates the resident to access and experience the landscape and outside facilities? To meet the needs of the resident for a wheelchair-accessible environment, a structure […]
Positioning the new gymnasium parallel to the street leads to three essential factors: High public presence, protection of the outdoor sports facilities behind the building and the definition of a space as a connecting element between the existing school building and the new gymnasium. The height of the new building is oriented towards the existing […]
Study 2007 – , Gemeinde Oberschützen Assignment: Retirement and nursing Home
In the style of the original urbanistic concept with several pavilions in a park-like scenery, the new clinic building is situated as a solitaire on the site. The two different height levels of the building – the four lower storeys are hidden behind trees, the two upper storeys accommodating the “think tank” take up the […]
The building site for the senior citizen centre is influenced by different conditions: The high noise pollution from the Gösserstraße on the one side, and the beauty of the park-like estate and the religious-cultural influence of the Göss Abbey on the other side. In order to emphasise not only the protective, but also the public […]
Both indoor and outdoor swimming pool lie parallel to the river Ill, a fact which interrelates the two different water surfaces. The centre of the elongated construction is formed by an open space which provides access to all facilities. Covered by a projection, it serves as a venue for different events. The design of the […]
The museum of the town of Hartberg is situated in the medieval Steinpeißhaus. The design for the extension of the building integrates the terraces and natural stone walls of the immediate surroundings into the whole concept. Visual and spatial connections make it possible to take up and continue historical axes. The multipurpose room of the […]
The free-standing Infineon office building continues the urban structure and the existing access concept on the company’s premises on Siemensstraße in Villach. It is positioned on the northeast corner of the site in a way to create a clear relationship to the town centre. The building consists of a concrete frame with reinforced core and […]
Topics, such as distribution of space, light and sun, the balance of privacy and community, openness and closedness, are taken up and resolved in a permeable arrangement of compact buildings. Compact individual buildings (three- to four-storey buildings with 4 flats per storey) and longitudinal buildings in an east-west orientation along the hillside are arranged in […]
Through the connection between room and content on the one hand and materiality and design on the other hand, the attempt was made to come up to the singularity of the Kastner & Öhler department store in the centre of the old town of Graz. The connecting factors are the history of the building itself, […]
“The residential area defines a former unsettled, park-like region with particular scenic attractions. The individual constructions, clearly classifiable as social housing, occupy the site without changing its characteristics to a great extend. The arrangement of the buildings on the site creates a balance and a relation between built-up and unspoilt regions. This leads to an […]
The plan was to build a studio house with cellar beneath an existing detached house on a site sloping gently to the south west. The new timber panel construction built on reinforced concrete panels is connected spatially and functionally to the existing building by a common terrace. It is characterised by a one-storey construction on […]
Neither the beginning of the suburb nor the access to the old town is the central theme of the university – in fact it is the densification of the urban area. The interior has a bridge-like, connecting structure. The shape of the building refers to the heterogeneous surroundings. Streets and directions are continued, switched and […]
The programme “Living 2000“ denominates the urban development planning of a large, widely unspoilt area between the Seine and the Orly Airport that incorporates landscape planning strategies. Due to the high level of traffic and noise in the whole urban area, the model prioritises the development of landscape measures and only plans to use selected […]

The site is located in a Wilhelminian style block that is interrupted by open buildings. It is bordered to the north by two twelve-storey apartment blocks and to the south by the beginnings of perimeter block development. The design approach plays with the idea of connecting the two different structures. The “slice” consists of 10 […]
With regard to the Europan programme, a general tool for handling urban peripheries was developed and implemented in the form of a development proposal for a plot of land in the south of Graz.
